In addition to working as an independent Nurse Practitioner at Modern Day Health Care in both South Dakota and Iowa, Mary Kay Nissen is an Associate Professor in the Graduate Nursing Program at South Dakota State University. She has many years of experience in both undergraduate and graduate nursing education. Ms. Nissen has practiced as an Advanced Practice Provider in Family Health since 2009. Her expertise is in Rural Health Care, Occupational Health and Urgent Care. Mary Kay holds specialist certification in Occupational Health. She has had the opportunity to develop and manage an Occupation Health clinic as well as an Urgent Care clinic. She has experience in project/clinic development and has currently received grant funding to develop a managed service entity to assist independent practitioners in the business aspect of clinic development and business management. She is the author of a number of journal articles and authored a chapter in Rural Health Nursing. In addition to teaching full-time, and working part-time for Modern Day she maintains a part-time practice in urgent/acute care in a rural community in Iowa. Ms. Nissen received her undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Iowa, a post master’s degree from Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa and her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Creighton University in Omaha, NE.
